First Thursday - Hats Along the Avenue

Pull out your favorite hat and come stroll the Avenue for a new First Thursday on April 2, "Hats Along the Avenue."

Take some selfies, listen to strolling musicians, sign up for prizes and receive discounts by showing your hat at some of the local businesses. 

Come out and show off your favorite hat from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. Pets are welcome.

Here is what is happening along the Avenue. Wear your favorite hat and visit each of these businesses:

Help celebrate over 50 years of being on the Avenue with Tops of Old Town, Del Ray’s own wonderful hat, suit and accessories store. Owners Willie Mae and her daughter Cheryl tell us their favorite charity involves veterans and kids. So stop by the market and make a card that we can deliver to a local veterans hospital. Be sure to stop in and thank them for being here! And try on some of their wonderful hats!

Strolling music by Zach John and Ian Kraft – take a minute and listen!!

Photos in your hat – between the Neighborhood Pharmacy and Greener Cleaner – by Meghan Stewart, Shot in the Dark Photography. Meghan will also have some unique hats for an unusual photo.

Emma’s Coffee Shop & Wine Bar, 106 Hume, will offer $5 house wines (a chardonnay and a malbec) and $.75 rice krispie treats for the young at heart. Also available are dog biscuits for four-legged friends. 

Market2Market, 116 East Del Ray, will have a $5 sandwich special called “the Hatter” and a “Mad Hatter – New Belgium” beer available, as well as a beer tasting.

At The Dog Store, 2301 Mt. Vernon, will design and construct dog hats, floral crowns and something of your own creation with your dog. They are also offering 20% off a toy or treats to any dog that come adorned with a hat!

St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub, 2300 Mt. Vernon, will be selling $5 handmade sweater hats, made by Mickey, a St. Elmo’s employees. St. Elmo's is also offering a special drink of the day.

At Taqueria Poblano, 2400 Mt. Vernon, mention “Hats on the Avenue” and wear a sombrero and get free guacamole (eat-in, one per table, or take-out).

Purple Goose, 2005 Mt. Vernon is offering 20% off all hats.

Kiwanis Club of Del Ray will be at the corner outside St. Elmo’s, 2300 Mt. Vernon, and will be handing out propeller beanies to kids.

Bellies & Babies, 1913 Mt. Vernon, is offering 15% off any hat.

Pork Barrel BBQ, 2312 Mt. Vernon, is offering a free fountain drink to anyone who has dinner and is wearing a “Fun” Hat.

Yours in Fitness, 2305 Mt. Vernon, will have a table out and answer questions on fitness, as well as analyzing body fat. 

Yoga in Daily Life, 2402 Mt. Vernon, will offer a First Thursday special – half price for the new session beginning this week. Must enroll and pay during First Thursday to be eligible.

United Bank, 2401 Mt. Vernon, will be making hats for children – crowns or bunny ears.

Del Ray Variety, 203 East Custis, is offering a $5 card with a $25 gift card purchase to those wearing a hat during First Thursday.

Top It Off, 1906 Mt. Vernon,will have models strolling the Avenue in beach hats and tunics – all are on sale at Top It Off.

First Thursdays is a series of free outdoor street festivals along Mount Vernon Avenue in the spring and summer. Every first Thursday of the months of April, May, June, July, August and September the Del Ray Business Association features businesses along Mt. Vernon Avenue, special events, food and music from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
