Building Altars Workshop at Del Ray Artisans

  • June 27, 2015
  • 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Del Ray Artisans Gallery

Come spend a day turning a small tin or box into an original mixed media altar during the "Building Altars" workshop on Saturday, June 27, 2015 from 9:30am to 5pm at Del Ray Artisans gallery. The traditional role of altars is to remind oneself of sacred ground. Altars can be created around traditional religious themes, or they can focus on very personal ideas of the sacred—a walk in the woods, a visit to the seashore, even time spent with a good book. Altar building orients us to the world and reminds us to pause for a moment and to reconnect with what feels important to us.

Come experience the connection and learn from world-renowned workshop instructor Lori K. Gordon (www.lorikgordon.org), a visual artist, writer, teacher, and founder and president of Six Degrees Consortium (www.sixdegreesconsortium.org). The workshop fee is $80 for Del Ray Artisans members and $95 for non-members, plus a supply fee of $20. You must be at least 18 years old to participate. For more details on the workshop, including the supply description and registration form, please visit: www.TheDelRayArtisans.org/Altars

Instructor Gordon’s artwork may be found in public and private collections around the world, including the Smithsonian Institution, Mississippi Humanities Council, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Art Across Arkansas. Her work has also been featured on MSNBC, CBS, NPR, and in several documentaries. She is well known for her Katrina Collection, a body of mixed-media work that incorporates detritus from the U.S.'s worst natural disaster. Six Degrees Consortium, founded by Gordon in 2001, is a 501(c)(3) organization based in Mississippi and dedicated to the idea that visual art can be a powerful means of education and cross-cultural understanding among people.

The "Building Altars" workshop is being held in conjunction with the “Building Bridges” art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery, which runs from June 5–28, 2015. Del Ray Artisans curators Linda Elliff and Barb Boatman and Six Degrees Consortium curator Lori K. Gordon invited Del Ray Artisans members and Mississippi Gulf Coast artists to create works which visually interpret the building of bridges between peoples and cultures. For more information about the exhibit, please visit: www.TheDelRayArtisans.org
