Breaking the Glass Ceiling – The Sky is the Limit Art Exhibit at Del Ray Artisans Gallery

Opening Reception: Friday, March 31 from 7-9pm

    Exhibit Dates: March 31 - April 30, 2017

“Breaking the Glass Ceiling – The Sky’s the Limit” reflects on the metaphor “breaking the glass ceiling”, pushing through a tough, not quite invisible barrier that keeps many from reaching their full potential or their dreams beyond a certain level in a hierarchy or in society. Breaking glass, breaking barriers, reaching beyond traditional boundaries, stretching beyond one’s own and society’s current limits, only accepting the limits of an endless sky have been a theme for many artists and reflect a very current theme. The exhibit runs from March 31 through April 30, 2017 at Del Ray Artisans gallery. Please join us for the Opening Reception on Friday, March 31 from 7-9pm.

This year Del Ray Artisans celebrates 25 years of supporting visual artists; providing equal access to all has always been at the center of its mission. Inclusion of all to provide a space to advance beyond set boundaries is as important today as it was 25 years ago.

“Breaking the Glass Ceiling – The Sky’s the Limit” is at Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Colasanto Center, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, Virginia 22301. Gallery hours are: First Thursdays (April-September) 12-9pm, Thursdays 12-6pm, Fridays 12-9pm, Saturdays 12-9pm, and Sundays 12-6pm. The gallery is free, open to the public, and handicap accessible.

For more information, please visit www.DelRayArtisans.org/exhibits or contact the curators Heike Gramckow (heikegramckow@yahoo.com) or Rachel Grodsky (rgrodsky@yahoo.com) or Director of Curating Kathy Turner (Curating@DelRayArtisans.org).

Irish Breakfast Band at First Night Alexandria, December 31, 2011

Irish Breakfast Band invites you to a Community Ceili Dance! Learn basic Irish social dancing taught by Shannon Dunne. No admission charge, light refreshments provided - feel free to bring something to share. The event takes place from 7pm to 9pm at Del Ray United Methodist Church, 100 East Windsor Ave., Alexandria, VA.

The Irish Breakfast Band is a diverse group of DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland residents who meet Saturday mornings for a potluck breakfast. After breakfast is a rehearsal of its repertoire of Celtic tunes. These Saturday meetings are usually held at a different house each week, with attendance often exceeding a dozen musicians, though rarely the exact same set two weeks in a row.

Most performances feature 8-12 musicians, often several fiddles and flutes, a guitar or two, a drummer, a hammered dulcimer, banjo and at least one vocalist. A child-friendly band, the group often brings extra percussion instruments to give young audience members a chance to participate.

A cold beer (or margarita or wine!), food from some of the area's top restaurants, and a free outdoor concert featuring some of the region's best local music -- including jazz, alt-rock, blues rock, alt-folk, and "funky stuff."  We can't think of a more perfect summer night.

Local musicians will perform on two stages at the 10th Annual Del Ray Music Festival on Saturday, May 20 from 3pm to 8pm at the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square, located at the intersection of Mount Vernon Avenue and Oxford Avenue in the heart of Del Ray.

Mount Vernon Avenue will be closed to traffic for the three blocks adjacent to the stage, and seven of Del Ray's top restaurants will host pop-up beer gardens -- a first for an outdoor street festival in the City of Alexandria.

Held each summer, the Del Ray Music Festival celebrates the diverse, local talent in the Washington, DC area music scene. The event is free and open to all.  For more information, visit www.delraymusicfestival.com.

Art on the Avenue is a multi-cultural arts festival celebrating our community’s diversity through the arts in the Del Ray neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia. This festival is held on the first Saturday in October, rain or shine!

Every year, over 50,000 visitors stroll down Mt. Vernon Avenue in Del Ray, Alexandria, between Bellefonte and Hume Avenues – people are greeted by over 300 artists (jewelers – silversmith & beaders, woodworkers, pottery makers, soap crafters, glass makers, unique painters, sculptures, fabric artists, and more), musicians (Irish, folk, rock n’ roll, country and more), and food vendors (hot dogs, BBQ, Indian, crab cakes, ,homemade cider donuts, and more). Kids activities have always been a vital part of the festival — stuff your own scarecrow, paint a pumpkin, lotus flower design, weave screen art, to name a few.

This event is free and open to all.  For more information, visit artontheavenue.org

Registration for the 2016 Turkey Trot is not yet open.

Want to help? We need volunteers. We need about 100 volunteers to make this event a success -- help with setup, runner registration, t-shirt sales, crowd control, water stop, finish line management, and cleanup.

A Thanksgiving morning tradition, the 40th annual Alexandria Turkey Trot is the Mid Atlantic's premiere Turkey Trot. With over 6,000 runners, and some of the fastest elite runners on the east coast, as well as stroller and dog divisions, the Turkey Trot is a great way to start your Thanksgiving morning.
