July 7th First Thursday Celebrates Our Country, Veterans

June 28, 2016 3:33 PM | Pat Miller (Administrator)

During the July First Thursday, Del Ray celebrates our country and recognizes our veterans and military families with "A Nation's Celebration: Red, White & Blue."  The monthly street festival takes place on July 7 from 6pm to dusk along Mount Vernon Avenue. The event is free and open to all.

First Thursday takes place along Mount Vernon Avenue in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, and features patriotic activities; discounts for veterans and military families at various businesses; plus music by Mars Rodeo, an old-fashioned cake walk (and treat walk for dogs!), and more at the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square (located at the intersection of Mount Vernon Ave. and Oxford Ave.)   The event is free and open to all.

Participants are encouraged to bring new single or queen size sheets; new towel sets (bath, hand & wash cloth); or gift cards to Target or grocery stores to benefit New Hope Housing, which is part of the City's efforts to ensure there are no homeless veterans in Alexandria. Recently, New Hope Housing  was able to secure a home in Del Ray and, with repairs completed by Rebuilding Alexandria, this housing is available for three formerly homeless vets.  The Del Ray Business Association is proud to support this extraordinary effort to “help a formerly homeless veteran make a new home."  Donations will be collected at the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square. For more information on New Hope Housing, visit www.newhopehousing.org.

Held the first Thursday of the month from April to September along Mount Vernon Avenue in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, First Thursday is a series of free outdoor street festivals that bring the community together around a fun theme, benefiting a local nonprofit.   This month’s event is sponsored by the Del Ray Business Association and Jen Walker, The Realtor for Del Ray and beyond! Since 1999, of McEnearney Associates.
