Congratulations to Kevin Reilly of Alexandria Hyundai, who was named a 2016 TIME Dealer of the Year Finalist!  The program honors new-car dealers in America who exhibit exceptional performance in their dealerships and perform distinguished community service.
"I have worked hard to build my dealership, my family, my community and my industry," said Reilly, who left a law and consulting career to open his Alexandria Hyundai dealership in 2001, following in the footsteps of his father, who also worked in the auto industry. "I had always wanted to start a dealership from the ground up and here was my chance."
Reilly supports a variety of organizations, schools, churches and community activities throughout Alexandria. He is also committed to the Hyundai Hope on Wheels program, an organization which helps fight pediatric cancer.
Reilly is proud to have received several community service awards, including the Potomac West Business Association's STAR Award for community service. Whether in his role as president of the local business association, on the executive board of the local citizens association, or as a business owner, Reilly has worked hard to be part of the solution in bringing residents and business together to make the Del Ray area of Alexandria a great place to live, work and play. "The STAR Award was special to me because it exemplified what I've worked so hard to do all my career -- find common ground and arrive at solutions that benefit all parties involved," he said.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 7th and the 2016 Del Ray House & Garden Tour.  A biennial project of the Del Ray Citizens Association, the tour serves as a fundraiser for neighborhood projects and the Alexandria Scholarship Fund.

The 11 homes on this year’s tour range from a house featured on the cover of Country Living magazine to one with a modern addition and a rooftop garden.  We will revisit two homes from the 2014 tour.  The “project house” will be back to show the incredible transformation of this home, and a farmhouse from the early 1900’s will be back with a newly constructed garage and guest/office suite in the backyard.  The recently released Del Ray Pattern Book of residential architecture and additional information about the history of Del Ray (formerly the town of Potomac) will also be highlighted on the tour.

The tour is wonderful reflection of Del Ray’s diversity as well as an opportunity to see the work of local architects and builders and to get great ideas on paint colors, tiles, decorative hardware, bath and kitchen fixtures, and much, much more. Be sure to look out for sneak previews of the homes on DIY Del Ray.

Tickets are $20 each until May 1, when they will increase to $25.  Tickets can be purchased online now at www.delraycitizens.org, and will also be available at the Del Ray Farmers Market starting April 23.

The self-guided tour runs from 11:00am to 5:00pm, rain or shine.

Proceeds from the tour are used to fund a $1,000 per year donation to The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria. Proceeds beyond the scholarship donation go towards beautification of the neighborhood and public art.

First Thursday returns to Del Ray on Thursday, April 7th from 6pm to dusk!  This month's theme is Hats Along the Avenue -- grab your favorite hat, Easter bonnet, or throwback to your elementary school days and make a crazy hat creation!

This month's First Thursday will benefit Blessings in a Backpack, a wonderful non-profit that provides food on the weekends for elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry.

The program was recently expanded to include Mt. Vernon Community School, and already serves 50 families.  The program has served Maury Elementary since 2014, and serves 53 families.

Single-serving items to benefit Blessings in a Backpack will be collected at the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square at the intersection of  Mt. Vernon Ave. & Oxford Ave. during First Thursday.  Suggested items include macaroni and cheese, apple sauce or pudding cups, granola bars, cereal bars, oatmeal (individual packets), black beans, or canned pasta -- whatever snack-sized or single-serving items you or your kids like!

In 1916 in Washington, DC, a father-son duo opened the M.E. Swing Co., and began roasting and serving premium coffee. Now a century later, Swing’s is a legendary local tradition -- so much, in fact, that it was featured on an episode of The West Wing. Although the Del Ray Coffee Bar and Alexandria Roastery are more recent locations in the Swing’s family, that doesn’t mean you can’t stop by to wish them a very happy 100th birthday and celebrate with a special signature drink.

M.E. Swing's Del Ray coffee bar is located at 501 East Monroe Ave.
